What is an industrial piercing?
The industrial piercing consists of two or more piercings (in the ear) that are connected to each other by means of a long barbell. The most well-known version of an industrial piercing is a diagonally placed barbell that connects two helix piercings. But there are more variations on the industrial piercing, where the barbell is sometimes also placed horizontally through the ear. Or through multiple layers of cartilage, so that the industrial can connect more than two piercings. In principle, two or more piercings that are connected to each other with one long piece of jewelry are called an industrial piercing. And another little bit of history lesson: the industrial piercing was first done around 1990 by Erik Dakota from California, USA.
How is the piercing done?
After carefully marking and the piercing itself, in most cases a suitable one-piece barbell is placed in your piercing immediately after the piercing, which remains in place during healing. In some cases, a piece of jewelry made of Bioplast or PTFE is chosen, because this material is somewhat more flexible and sometimes fits the anatomy of the ear a little better.
It is also possible that it is decided to let the piercings heal separately with loose jewelry first. After healing, the loose jewelry is then replaced by a one-piece industrial barbell. The disadvantage of this method of healing can be that the piercings are no longer perfectly aligned after healing, or that the piercings move (migrate) separately, which can make it more difficult to find a suitable industrial jewelry later.
On the other hand, a one-piece jewelry can put too much pressure on the piercing wounds, which can cause excessive swelling or other complications. That is why it is super important when placing an industrial piercing that you find a good, skilled piercer who looks carefully at the shape of your ear and chooses the most suitable jewelry for this.
Healing period
Because an industrial piercing consists of two or more cartilage piercings, you can expect a considerable healing period. Cartilage heals more slowly than piercings that are placed in softer tissue (with better blood circulation). You should therefore often take into account a healing period of at least 6-9 months, usually even longer. As an aftercare method, you can choose to use a saline solution for your piercings, or use a mild piercing soap from EasyPiercing, for example. And as with all piercings: during the healing period, it is important that you keep your piercing out of the sun as much as possible and do not go bathing/swimming or to the sauna with it to prevent infections.
What jewelry is suitable?
In most cases, your piercer will try to place a standard piece of jewelry. Usually with a thickness of 1.6 mm, but in consultation you can sometimes also choose a 1.2 mm piece of jewelry. If a standard, straight industrial barbell does not work, your piercer may bend the barbell so that it fits the shape of your ear better. Industrial barbells are usually at least a few centimeters long. In our shop you will find a large collection of industrial piercing barbells, and there are even industrial extensions with which you can create your own, unique industrial jewelry.
