Everything about caring for your tattoo

If you have just had a tattoo done, you will of course want to take the best possible care of it afterwards. A good start is half the battle, because to keep your tattoo as beautiful as possible, it also needs to heal properly. The aftercare methods for tattoos can vary, and everyone has their own preferences. We have listed the most commonly used methods for you!

Just done, what now?
In addition to a fantastic picture on your body, you will probably also have a lot of information about the aftercare of your tattoo. Of course, all these aftercare methods have the ultimate goal of letting your tattoo heal as quickly and beautifully as possible. But how does it all work exactly? Below we explain which aftercare aspects can be addressed when caring for your newly done tattoo:

Washing Essential for hygienic healing of your tattoo: washing. Always make sure your hands are clean when you are going to care for a newly done tattoo, so start by washing your hands thoroughly. Then wash the tattoo with a mild, unscented soap and rinse with lukewarm water. Gently pat it dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Wash your tattoo twice a day for the first few days. If healing continues smoothly, washing once a day is sufficient. In our shop you will find various, fine tattoo wash gels that are suitable for freshly tattooed skin, all without perfume and mild for your skin.

Foil Applying a transparent (household) foil after getting your tattoo can have advantages, but also disadvantages. The big advantage is of course that you keep lint and other dirt out of your tattoo. Your skin also feels a little less dry, which means that the first phase of healing can go more smoothly and you will have less trouble with scabs. However, foil can also close off your skin too much, which means that it can no longer breathe properly. This can cause serious irritation, especially if your skin is normally a little more sensitive. There are also special tattoo foils available, these foils are self-adhesive and remain on the tattoo for the first few days.

Apply After washing and carefully patting your tattoo dry, your skin can feel quite dry. And a tattoo that is too dry can develop small cracks and tears, which can damage the tattoo. That is why it is often recommended to apply a cream or balm to your tattoo. This keeps your skin supple, irritations can be reduced and your tattoo can heal as beautifully as possible. Apply your tattoo after every wash, twice a day for the first few days. If your tattoo has healed a bit more, you can still apply twice a day, with an extra application in between if your skin starts to feel very dry. Apply sparingly, because your tattoo should not be covered in a thick layer of ointment or cream all the time. Apply thinly, so that the product can be absorbed properly and do its job.

LITHA An abbreviation for Leave It The Hell Alone. In this case, you limit the care to a minimum and ensure that your tattoo can heal clean and dry as much as possible. A daily wash is fine with this method, but otherwise there is no covering or lubrication. After a few days, a light balm or cream is usually lubricated to keep the skin a bit more supple.

Cream VS Ointment
In most cases, lubrication is an essential part of a good healing of your tattoo. Some swear by a greasy ointment, others prefer a lighter cream. Whatever you use, make sure your ointment is free of perfume and suitable for the care of tattoos. Lubricating your tattoo can help prevent scabs and flakes and keeps your skin supple. Some creams also contain ingredients that help reduce redness and itching. The following creams and balms are often used and are suitable as tattoo aftercare:

Easytattoo Cream Super fine cream that is specially tailored to the healing of tattoos. The cream is light, spreads well, does not stick and keeps your skin supple and soft. With Panthenol which helps with itching and burning.

Easytattoo Vegan Tattoo Balm The vegan and skin-friendly replacement for petrolatum ointments such as Vaseline. This vegan balm is very greasy, spreads easily and therefore forms a layer over your skin so that it does not dry out. In addition, this balm contains all kinds of ingredients that take excellent care of your skin. The skin does feel a bit greasy after applying it, so use this balm sparingly.

TattooMed After Tattoo A light cream that is absorbed well and does not leave a greasy or sticky feeling. The cream contains Panthenol which helps to soothe the skin. Absorbs quickly but also makes the skin very soft at the same time.

Vaseline and Bepanthen We put these two together, because they fall under the classic/old school tattoo care. Bepanthen (also called Bepanthol) is often still a popular choice, but contains wool fat/lanolin which can cause an allergic reaction. In addition, the Bepanthen ointment is a fairly strong ointment that can close the skin and thus make healing more difficult. If you still want to use Bepanthen, choose the cream. Vaseline is a petroleum-based ointment that forms a layer over the skin. The advantage is that your skin dries out less quickly and seems to feel smoother. However, Vaseline does not contain any ingredients that can help with healing, so the barrier effect is the only advantage of this ointment.

Ok, but what should I choose now?

Skin types can vary greatly. If you have a demanding skin that is easily irritated, then definitely choose a lighter cream or lotion that does not close off your skin too much. And for all creams and balms: less is more! Do not apply too thickly, but apply a modest layer that can be absorbed well. If necessary, it is better to apply an extra thin layer once than to apply far too much at once. In general, the most commonly used method is wash-pat dry-apply-repeat. Always discuss this with your artist so that you have coordinated the methods well. Verse Tattoo - DON'Ts

Keep your healing tattoo out of the sun or cover it with a clean, lint-free piece of clothing
Do not go to the sauna, swimming or take a bath while your tattoo is healing. (Swimming/bath water contains too many bacteria and can cause an infection. It also makes your skin too soft, which can hinder proper healing)
Keep your hands off! Do not pick, scratch or otherwise touch it

Verse Tattoo - DO's

Apply a good tattoo sunscreen to your (newly) healed tattoo
Change your bed linen regularly while your tattoo is healing. And afterwards, of course
Always keep your tattoo as dry as possible
