All about nose piercings!

Whether you go for a small, subtle stud or prefer a ring: with a nose piercing you can really go in all directions! How is a nose piercing done, how long does it take for a nose piercing to heal and what jewelry can you wear? We describe that and more in this blog post.

What is a nose piercing?
A nose piercing is a piercing that is done through the side of your nose, just above or through your nostril. Studs or rings are often worn in a nose piercing. Sometimes multiple nose piercings are worn next to each other, or a nose piercing on either side of the nose.

How is a nose piercing done?
Before your piercing is done, your piercer will determine the location together with you. A nose piercing is usually done in the natural 'dent' that forms when your nostril spreads, for example when you want to sniff a scent properly. In this place, the piercing will move as little as possible, which will of course benefit the healing process. The area is then cleaned and marked thoroughly, after which the piercing will be placed. There are piercers who do not use a clamp for this, but only a needle and possibly a cork, spatula or receiving tube.

Some piercers prefer to use a clamp for some extra grip. The method can therefore differ per piercer. After the needle has gone through your nostril, the jewelry is placed in place as quickly as possible. Then there is a short cleaning round and you are done!

To have a nose piercing done, without the permission of your parents, you must be at least 16 years old.

Healing of your nose piercing
Your nostril consists largely of cartilage. Cartilage is slightly less well supplied with blood than, for example, your lip or earlobe, which is why it takes a little longer than average for your nose piercing to heal completely. You should take into account a healing period of 3 to 6 months. Healing can also take a little longer in some cases.

How do you care for a nose piercing?
You can use saline solution or piercing soap to care for your nose piercing. The saline solution from Easypiercing (the blue bottle) or the mild cleaning gel (the green bottle) are perfectly suitable for this. You can also make your own saline solution. Care for your piercings in the shower, that will save you a lot of mess!

You can also choose to leave your piercing alone and not pay any extra attention to its care. You let your body take care of it all by itself. This method (LITHA) works fine for some people, but others still want to keep the piercing clean themselves. If necessary, discuss with your piercer which aftercare method suits you best.

If you suffer from an inflamed nose piercing, it is best to contact your piercer or GP.

Changing your nose piercing
Changing your nose piercing doesn’t have to be difficult. Most nose piercing jewelry is easy to remove from your piercing and easy to put back in. A curved nose stud is inserted with a careful, rotating motion. It may feel a bit strange the first time, but you will get better at it over time. If you wear a labret stud or other piercing bar in your nose piercing, the top ball or accessory is usually unscrewable. You then unscrew this accessory and can then change your piercing. An insertion pin in the same size as your piercing jewelry can make changing your nose piercing even easier.

What size nose piercing?
If you are going to change your nose piercing, it is also important that you know which size you need for your new jewelry. In most cases, your piercer will be able to tell you what size nose piercing you are wearing. Usually, a nose piercing jewelry has a thickness of 0.8 mm or 1 mm, in some cases it also happens that a nose piercing is done with a jewelry with a thickness of 1.2 mm. If you want to wear a nose stud, it is usually sufficient if you know the thickness of the bar. If you want to wear a nose ring, it is also important that you know what diameter you need. When your piercing is just done, you often wear a slightly larger diameter to accommodate any swelling. After the healing period, you can then choose to wear a fitting nose ring. To do this, measure the distance from the hole of your piercing to the bottom of your nostril. This is the minimum diameter you need for your new nose ring.
