Hidden in the center of your ear, it is the Daith piercing. And this unique ear piercing is said to cure migraines and headaches. What is a Daith piercing, how do you best care for it and what is the deal with the Daith piercing and migraines? Read more about it in this blog post!
The origin of the Daith piercing
The Daith piercing is shrouded in quite a bit of mystique. The piercing was first done by Erik Dakota from California in 1992, where the piercing was invented together with a client of Jewish descent. The word "daith" is derived from the Hebrew word "da'ath", which means knowledge, intelligence. The idea behind this is that the piercing is done in such a way that the piercing acts as a protective filter and keeps nonsense and untruths out of the ear. The Daith piercing is done in the small piece of cartilage just above the ear canal and connects to the base of the helix. The Daith piercing should be done in such a way that you cannot immediately see the entrance or exit of the piercing. The bottom of the ring should be placed in such a way that it looks like it comes directly from the ear canal. A piercing with considerable significance and also not an easy piercing to do.
How is the Daith piercing done?
A Daith piercing is usually done with a 1.2 mm needle. Although various techniques are possible, it is common for the daith piercing to be done with the help of a receiving tube. A slightly curved needle can also make the procedure easier. A ring with a thickness of 1 mm or 1.2 mm is usually used as jewelry. A thicker piece of jewelry is often not possible, most people do not have enough tissue in that spot to have a thicker piece of jewelry placed in it. A good piercer can of course judge this perfectly for you.
Daith piercings and migraine
What is the deal with Daith piercings and migraine? If you are a migraine patient, then you know how hellish a migraine attack can be. The headache is terrible and almost impossible to suppress, you can become extremely sensitive to light, sound or smells and also suffer from all kinds of neurological complaints, such as loss of limbs or limited vision. Many people can do little else than lie down on a bed in a dark room and wait until the worst of the attack is over. Usually combined with a large dose of painkillers.
It makes sense that you would like to be rid of your migraine, preferably forever. According to the principles of acupuncture, there are pressure points at the site of the Daith piercing that, with the right stimulation, could relieve headaches and migraines. Some people have indicated that they noticed a clear decrease in complaints after having a Daith piercing done. Unfortunately, there is insufficient medical evidence to substantiate these claims. So whether a Daith piercing really does rid you of your migraines and headaches, we do not know. But that does not alter the fact that a Daith piercing is a special and beautiful piercing, that is reason enough to have one done!
Healing of Daith piercings
A Daith piercing is and remains a cartilage piercing, so you have to take into account a healing period of at least six to nine months. It takes a long time, but in the end it is definitely worth it. During that time, you will of course stay away from your piercing as much as possible, do not change the jewelry and do not go bathing, swimming or to the sauna with your healing piercing, to prevent infections.
Fortunately, the Daith piercing is nicely hidden and flat against your ear when placed correctly, so you will usually not have too much trouble with it. As an aftercare method, you can choose a (warm) saline solution for your piercings, or use a mild piercing soap from EasyPiercing. In general, your piercing will heal well with a cleaning routine of 1x per day. If you use soap, you can choose to do this in the shower, then you do not have to fiddle with a crooked head under the tap.
Which jewelry fits a Daith piercing?
In most cases, your piercer will choose a standard 1.2 mm piece of jewelry for your Daith piercing. Usually, a ring with a large diameter is chosen. After the healing period, you can choose a click ring or ball closure ring, possibly with a smaller diameter so that it fits better. Daith piercing jewelry comes in all kinds of colors and sizes, with or without stones. Click rings in particular are very popular, because they make changing extra easy. There are also special Daith Clickers with a special shape and beautiful patterns, developed for daith piercings. Curious about what we have to offer in our shop?
