What are dreadlocks?

You've probably seen them on someone before, dreadlocks. For some, dreads are an expression of a (religious) belief, for others it's mainly about the look. Dreadlocks are created when you let your hair get tangled together and felted into long strands. When you let dreadlocks develop naturally, they are also called 'naturals'. Nowadays, people often consciously choose dreads and have them applied in a specialized salon or by someone who works from home.

Having dreads applied

Letting dreads develop naturally often takes a very long time, but according to many, it gives the most beautiful result. In addition, the process is more gradual, so you do not immediately have a clear head of dreads but will first have to go through the 'big head of uncombed hair' phase. It also depends on your hair type how quickly and easily your hair becomes felted.

Another commonly used way to put in dreads is the rip and twist method, or by teasing the hair and then crocheting the hair with a crochet hook. If you choose this, you will have a full head of dreadlocks in a few hours.

Care

Caring for dreads is something that many people still make mistakes in. Especially in the beginning, you will have to invest a lot of time in caring for your fresh dreads so that they will become felted nicely. Washing with a good dread shampoo will also help a lot with this.

Dread shampoo

The ideal shampoo for your dreads is a shampoo that does not foam too much, is easy to rinse out and makes your hair nice and rough. You can then choose, for example, the dread shampoo from Knotty Boy or the soap from Dr Bronner. Added oils such as lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus and peppermint also help with the care of your scalp!

Wax and conditioners

Opinions on the use of wax and conditioners are very divided. Especially with wax there are clear proponents and opponents. However, there are different types of dread wax available, each of which has its own use. Older dreads that have become dry and brittle in particular can benefit from regular waxing. It is important that you do not smear your head with sticky wax, but that you use a small amount and distribute it well through your dreads.

Do you prefer not to use wax for your dreads? Then you can always opt for a light dreadlock conditioner from Knotty Boy. The Knotty Boy conditioners are packaged in a handy spray bottle so that you can easily distribute it over your dreads. There is also a Cooling Spray from Knotty Boy that soothes your irritated scalp.

Which care method is ultimately best for you depends mainly on your personal preference and your hair type. But above all, choose the method that you like best!
