Is this going to be your first piercing? Exciting! You'll have to make a lot of decisions... At which shop will you get your piercing? Which piercing will it be? And more of these questions. We understand that it can be quite confusing sometimes, but with the right preparation you can go a long way. This blog post is of course a good start, but do look for more information, ask questions to people who have had piercings done before and don't decide too quickly. Don't forget to look at the possible short-term and long-term risks, because every piercing involves risks. After all, it remains a wound that has its own healing method... Every piercing requires the necessary attention and often a good deal of patience. Are you younger than 16? Then you will have to go to the piercing shop with one of your parents or guardians.
Placement
On which part of the body do you want to get the piercing? And, is it possible to get that spot pierced? It all sounds pretty simple; the needle is pierced through your skin, the piercing jewelry is in place and that's it! But in practice, there's a lot more to it. Every body is different, and in some cases it can mean that the one piercing you've been thinking about for so long doesn't really suit your body type at all. To save you all sorts of trouble, your piercer will take a good look at the part of your body to be pierced and also inform you when it's better not to get the piercing. A piercing in a place with too little space, for example, can lead to complications such as irritation, displacement and even outgrowth of your piercing. Of course, these are risks that come with every piercing, but your piercer will be able to tell you in advance whether the piercing you have in mind can be done on the body part in question.
Finding a shop
Keep in mind in advance that you'll probably go back to the shop where you got your piercing. In many cases, a shorter or different type of piercing jewelry can be put in after the usual healing time, and your piercer will help with this first change. A shop that is easily accessible to you can therefore be useful. But the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the shop where you want to have the piercing done, which in some cases can mean that there is some travel time involved. First walk into the piercing shop, ask some questions and, if necessary, let the piercer assess whether your piercing can be done. You can go to most shops without an appointment, but sometimes it can be nice to make an appointment.
GGD approved
Since 2009, the GGD has been checking piercing shops for hygienic working methods. Most piercing shops have their quality mark in plain sight, but feel free to ask for it if you cannot see it right away. The GGD checks the shop on various points, including the working method, the materials used, and the composition of the jewelry. All sterilization equipment such as the autoclave is also subjected to various tests, so that it is certain that these devices all function properly. Do you want to know more about the GGD checks? Then view the piercing guidelines here on the RIVM website.
Titanium jewelry
New piercings may not be done with piercing jewelry that contains nickel or a nickel compound. That is why all new piercings are generally done with titanium piercing jewelry (or another hypoallergenic material). A piercing shop that complies with the GGD quality mark will therefore also pierce with titanium piercing jewelry as standard. This eliminates possible allergic reactions to nickel as much as possible. After your piercings have completely healed, you can choose piercing jewelry made of a different material or in a different color. Do you still want to wear titanium piercing jewelry after the healing period? Of course you can! In our shop you will find a wide range of titanium piercing jewelry.
Hopefully this blog post has helped you a bit more! In any case, we wish you the best of luck with your future new piercings and especially a good healing period.
