How old do you have to be for getting a piercing?
When you get a piercing, your age is taken into account. But why is your age important for getting a piercing? We are happy to explain this to you in this blog!

Before you get a piercing
When you have chosen a shop that will do your piercing, you will often be asked some questions upon entering. Among other things, about your age, possible health risks or other matters that your piercer must be aware of. This process involves forms, which must be completed and signed so that you and your piercer are both aware of any special circumstances and that you are old enough to get a piercing. This is a mandatory part for piercing shops with a permit, this way you can be sure that the shop meets the basic requirements for safe and hygienic piercing.

Getting piercings and age
Okay, but why is your age important for getting a piercing? The government and the GGD have decided that it is not permitted to pierce persons under the age of 12. If you are between 12 and 16 years old, you need the permission of your parent(s) before you can get a piercing. One of your parents must also be present when you get the piercing.

It may sound silly, but if you add up all the reasons, you may see why this is the best choice. Getting a piercing is something you should think about seriously. When getting a piercing, your body is pierced with a sharp needle, after which this piercing wound must heal with a suitable piercing jewelry. Your body has to work hard for this, and during the healing process, all sorts of things can still go wrong, such as an infection or growth of your piercing. The care of a healing piercing also requires attention, so that you can help prevent all that unpleasantness. The part of the body where the piercing is placed is permanently adjusted. In most cases, you will at least have a scar from your piercing, even if you remove the piercing after a while. These are all things you should think about carefully before you get the piercing. It may sound drastic, but you can always start with a set of pierced earrings before you decide (later) to get another piercing.

Some shops have different (age) rules than the proposed GGD rules and do not pierce young people under the age of 16. Firstly, for the reasons mentioned earlier, but also because a body grows incredibly fast and changes a lot during this age period. This increases the risk that a piercing will move or grow out after it has been pierced. Therefore, always check with the piercing shop of your choice first to see what their rules and guidelines are.

Different types of piercings and age limits
The minimum age for getting a piercing can also differ per piercing type. Piercings in your earlobe are generally always allowed, even under the age of 12. It is best to have your earlobe pierced, instead of 'shooting' with an earring gun or the piercing system that is still widely used. Having your ear pierced with an earring gun or piercing system causes considerable damage to your skin and the underlying tissue, because of the blunt jewelry that is pushed through your earlobe. A piercer uses a clean, super sharp needle, which means that your earlobe is less damaged and the wound can heal much faster. So if you have an earring pierced, you have the best chance of a beautiful, well-healed ear piercing. You will also immediately know how the process for other piercings works.

To have piercings other than earlobe piercings, you must be at least 16 years old. If you are under 16, you need permission from your parent(s) and one of them must be present during the piercing.

For nipple piercings and intimate piercings, you must be at least 16 years old by law. However, most shops even have a minimum age of 18. Ask your piercing shop what the rules are for getting an intimate or nipple piercing.
