How to clean gold piercing jewelry?
Gold piercing jewelry is the perfect addition to your jewelry collection. But how do you clean gold piercings, and how can your real gold piercing jewelry still discolor? Read all about it in our blog post!

Why should you clean gold?
Over time, your gold piercings can lose their shine and start to look duller. Because your piercings are worn day in, day out, soap residue, cream and skin oils can quickly build up. This can make your gold piercing jewelry look dull. Regular cleaning ensures that your gold piercing jewelry stays beautiful for a long time.

Can real gold discolor?
Due to sulfur in the air, your gold piercing can discolor somewhat. This is not due to the material used for your piercing. Our 18 carat gold piercing jewelry is of the very best quality and the gold will therefore never oxidize. However, the sulphur in the air can attach itself to your gold piercing jewellery, causing a dark or even black layer to form. This can happen with yellow gold piercings, but also with rose gold piercings and white gold piercings. However, this layer can be easily removed with the tips below.

How do you clean gold piercing jewellery?
To make your gold piercing jewellery shine again, you can use various cleaning methods. When cleaning your gold piercings, always use a very soft (tooth)brush and a soft cloth, such as flannel or a cloth specifically for jewellery.

Tip: a fine sieve is useful when cleaning the jewellery! This prevents your precious piercing balls and rods from being washed down the sink.

Do not use abrasive or aggressive cleaning agents for your gold piercings. This can seriously damage the jewellery, causing it to lose its shine. Also avoid using kitchen paper or other paper, the wood fibres that are processed in it can damage your piercing.

Gold is a beautiful, but also precious material. Therefore, always make sure that you are careful when cleaning your real gold piercings.

Easily clean gold jewelry with a polishing cloth
If you wear real gold jewelry every day, you can hardly avoid regular cleaning. Of course, you can do this very extensively, according to one of the methods below. But if you want to give your gold piercing jewelry a quick refresh, use a polishing cloth for gold jewelry. This is the fastest way to easily get your gold jewelry clean and shiny. In our shop you will find the jewelry polishing cloths from Hagerty. These handy cloths are perfect for cleaning your gold jewelry.

Clean gold piercing jewelry with green soap
You can clean gold piercing jewelry with a little green soap. To do this, make a soapy solution of some green soap with lukewarm water. Place your gold piercing jewelry in the soapy water (possibly using the sieve!) and let it soak for a while. Then brush your gold piercing clean with the soft toothbrush, rinse well with lukewarm water and then rub your piercing dry with the soft cloth.

Cleaning gold piercing jewelry with dishwashing liquid
You can also clean gold piercings with a little dishwashing liquid, such as Dreft. This works particularly well for piercings that are set with diamonds, zirconia or other gemstones. To do this, make a soapy solution of lukewarm water and some dishwashing liquid, carefully brush your jewelry clean with the soft toothbrush and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Then carefully rub your piercing clean with the soft cloth.

Cleaning gold piercing jewelry with denture cleaner
This tip works for all gold piercing jewelry, but is especially useful for gold lip piercings and tongue piercings to remove plaque and other deposits! Dissolve an effervescent tablet for cleaning dentures in a glass of water, place your gold piercing in it and leave for a few minutes. If necessary, use the soft toothbrush to brush further, rinse thoroughly with water and rub your jewelry clean with the soft cloth.

These cleaning tips are of course ideal for cleaning gold piercing jewelry, but of course also work well for cleaning your piercings made of titanium, surgical steel or other materials.
