Semi-permanent, what?
Most brightly colored hair dye is also called semi-permanent hair dye. This is mainly due to the composition of the dye; semi-permanent dye is made up of a special conditioner base with added pigments to achieve the right final color. Each brand has its own pigment composition and color ranges, which means that there is now a whole spectrum of fantastic colors available.
Which brand should I choose?
In our shop you will find brightly colored hair dye from La Riche Directions and Herman's Amazing Hair Color. Each brand puts together the color ranges in their own way, so which brand you ultimately choose is mainly a matter of personal preference. It's up to you, so experiment and see which brand suits your hair type best.
The colour base
One of the reasons why it is best to bleach your hair (also called bleaching or blonding) before you start using semi-permanent dye is the durability of the colour. When you bleach your hair, your hair scales open up and the pigments of the hair dye are better absorbed and the colour lasts longer. That is why almost all brands recommend bleaching your hair first before you start colouring your hair. For the dark, well-pigmented colours, you usually do not have to bleach your hair completely white, a good few shades lighter is usually sufficient. Most red shades can also conceal a slightly yellowish base colour very well. But all lighter shades absolutely need the lightest possible base. For pastel shades and silver shades, you even need a completely white base, otherwise you will not get the desired colour result.
Preferably have your hair bleached by a skilled hairdresser. If you do want to do it yourself, make sure you read and follow the instructions on the packaging carefully, and try the bleaching on a test strand first. You can opt for bleaching from a hair salon, but you can also get started with one of our Bleach Kits. Before you bleach: stop washing your hair at least two days in advance. The natural skin oils on your scalp immediately offer you some more protection against any irritation that may occur during bleaching. Also apply the bleach quite thickly, so that all hair is well covered with a layer of bleach. Then leave the bleach to work uncovered, this can help prevent that yellowish glow. Wash your hair at least twice after bleaching so that all bleach residue is properly rinsed away and the pH value of your hair can recover. Then your hair is ready for a fresh, bright hair color!
Silver, gray and pastel shades
Super beautiful, those beautiful pastel and gray shades! Our shop offers various shades of grey and silver, with the Granny Grey from Herman's Amazing Hair and Silver from Directions often being used. But how exactly do you get the best result? This often requires quite a bit of work and preparation, but in the end you will have that beautiful colour in your hair. Do you want to try it? Then the tips below will definitely help you.
Bleach it, baby! Your hair must be WHITE for the grey and pastel shades. If your hair has a light glow, it is best to use a toner first to get your hair in the right colour. White, that is. Grey and pastel shades are a real commitment, so be prepared for quite a few bleaching sessions to get the lightest possible base. Preferably consult with a skilled hairdresser about how you can get your hair as light as possible without damaging it too much.
Wash, wash, wash. Make sure you neutralise your hair well after bleaching. Wash your hair at least twice with a mild shampoo to remove any bleach residue, but also to restore the pH value of your hair and close the hair cuticles a little. If these three factors are not in check, there is a good chance that you will see little to no result from the hair dye. Open hair cuticles ensure that you rinse the color out of your hair very quickly. If you can wait a day (or longer), you can also use a conditioner to give your hair a boost and neutralize your hair.
Then: dye! Make sure your hair is clean, so wash it with a pH neutral shampoo. Rinse it well, and when your hair is still slightly damp, apply the hair dye to your hair. Don't be stingy, apply it well! Then wrap your hair in aluminum foil and then wrap it again in a towel (or hat) and leave it like that for a few hours. No worries, our hair dyes are basically richly pigmented conditioners, so that's fine. After the development time, you can rinse your hair with cold water, then the hair cuticles close again a bit and your color will stay in better.
A little patience... Sometimes you don't get the desired result right away. It can help to just try again after a while, and again. An extra long development time can also help to get your hair in the right condition to retain the color.
Dyeing 101 - how do you go about it?
First wash your hair with a mild, PH neutral shampoo
Grease the skin at your hairline with some jojoba oil, Vaseline or greasy cream
Apply hair dye with a hair dye brush, so you can work more precisely
Then comb the hair dye well through your hair, until the dye gets a more 'foamy' substance
Let the hair dye soak in for a long time. The lighter shades in particular give a better result if you let the dye soak in for longer than the indicated 30 minutes.
Are you afraid that you will give the rest of your body and bathroom a cool color in addition to your hair? No need! With these tips you can prevent creatively colored limbs and bathrooms:
Don't feel like colored hands or nails? Use gloves!
Don't feel like a colored scalp or colored forehead? Apply the hair dye to about a centimeter away from your scalp, comb the rest of the dye well from the roots.
Remove stray hair dye residue immediately with a little water and some soap or a little alcohol. wear_gloves_while_dyeing.jpg

Keeping your hair color beautiful for longer
How long your color will ultimately last depends on several factors. If you wash your hair more often, the color will also fade faster. Hair that remains very porous will also release the color faster. The type of shampoo and the amount of styling products you use can also have an effect. But what can you do? Below we list our personal, favorite tips:
Use a pH neutral, good cleansing shampoo before coloring so that your hair is optimally clean and conditioner and styling residues are properly removed
Rinse your hair with cold water after coloring, this way the color pigments will stay in the hair better
Use a special color conditioner or mix a little of your color with silicone-free conditioner for quick color touch-ups between dyeing sessions
Leave your hair dye to soak in for a few hours, covered under a plastic cap or shower cap, it can't do any harm!
