Why does your septum piercing start to smell?
When you wear jewelry in your piercings, all kinds of residues can remain in them. Think of soap, for example, but with a septum piercing certainly also skin flakes, skin oils and nasal discharge (yes, snot!). These residues together form a layer that adheres to your jewelry and can build up over time into a layer of deposit. With healed septum piercings, it remains a thin layer that adheres to your jewelry, with a somewhat unpleasant odor. But since your septum piercing is in your nose, you can't really get around it and there's a chance that you'll get a whiff of piercing funk aroma with every breath.
Of course, it's normal for your skin to leave behind oils and flakes, but if your collection is already getting pretty stale, you'll have to take some action. Now, in most cases, it will remain a light (cheesy) smell that you only smell when you take out your piercing jewelry or move it back and forth. This usually disappears once you've cleaned your piercing again. Once you've reached the aroma of a Blue Stilton, it's really time to bring out the big guns, but hopefully it won't come to that after reading this blog post.
With newly placed septum piercings, an unpleasant smell is often part of the normal healing process. During healing, you'll have to deal with fluids such as blood and wound fluid, in addition to the possible skin oils and flakes that you can normally already encounter with a septum piercing. Many septum piercing wearers talk about the smell of a 'dead animal', which can be really annoying. This smell disappears on its own during healing. But you can reduce the smell by regularly rinsing your piercing with a warm saline solution. Then use our piercing oil Fix to make your septum piercing smell fresh again. A mix of jojoba and lavender oil can also provide relief. Do not apply the mixture directly to your healing piercing, but just below it. This way you can still smell a fresh scent, even if it is only temporary.
Regular cleaning helps
That is actually a no-brainer, but because your septum piercing is a bit more difficult to reach, cleaning it can also be a bit more difficult. The easiest way is to regularly rinse your piercing (in fact ALL your piercings) thoroughly while showering, possibly with some mild piercing soap. The Easypiercing soap, for example, is perfect for this. Rinse everything thoroughly and then dry your septum piercing well. You can also clean your septum piercing using a warm saline solution and a cotton swab or gauze pad. Rinse again and dry thoroughly when you're done. If you clean your piercings regularly, you'll soon notice that this also keeps the odor away.
If your septum piercing is still healing, follow your piercer's aftercare advice as much as possible. Gently rinsing with warm water or a saline solution generally doesn't do any harm and helps to reduce the unpleasant odor during healing.
