Swimming after getting a piercing - everything you need to know
Aah, summer is coming again! That undoubtedly means relaxing in the sun and regularly cooling off in a nice pool. But, how long should you actually not swim after a piercing? And why should you avoid the pool with a healing piercing? Read all about it in our blog post!

How long should you not swim after a piercing?
For the healing of your piercing, it is important that you avoid swimming until your piercing is completely healed. This can sometimes take several months, especially with cartilage piercings, for example. A navel piercing also requires a long healing period, usually up to 9 months. It is best not to swim, take a bath or go to the sauna during this period.

Why not swim after a piercing?
During the piercing, a wound is made that goes through several layers of skin and sometimes also muscle tissue (think of a lip piercing, for example). Healing this takes quite a while, but it is also a challenge to let a piercing heal properly. Irritation of your piercing, or dirt in your piercing can quickly cause a lot of trouble. Your piercing is actually a small, open wound during this healing. And it is important that you try to prevent dirt from getting into that piercing wound as much as possible. If that does happen, your piercing can become inflamed and then the healing will take even longer.

All this together is actually the main reason why swimming, bathing or going to the sauna is not recommended while your piercing is healing. Also try to keep your newly placed piercing out of the sun as much as possible. This of course applies to all wounds or vulnerable skin, but certainly also to your piercings. The sun can easily damage your healing skin.

What is allowed then?
Of course it all sounds very strict... Is it really necessary in practice for the healing of your piercing? Of course it can also differ per person. One person suffers from an infection more quickly than another. Your resistance and health at the time of piercing can also count. So it can certainly differ per situation. But you give your piercing the best chance of success if you avoid swimming as much as possible during the healing process. If that doesn't work, there are fortunately a number of things you can do to clean your piercing again.

Cleaning your piercing after swimming
Okay, swimming is inevitable and you want to clean your piercing extra well afterwards. What is the best way to do that? There are different ways to clean your piercing after swimming. One method is not necessarily better than the other, but they can all be a solution to provide your piercings with some extra care during the swimming and summer period.

Are you on the road a lot or are you going to a festival, for example? Then choose ready-made solutions from Easypiercing or CleanySkin, for example. The saline solution from Easypiercing (blue bottle), hygienic solution (orange bottle) and mild cleaning gel (green bottle) all complement each other perfectly for the care of your piercings. And they are also easy to take with you! The saline solution with panthenol from CleanySkin is also perfect for the care of your piercings.

Rinse your piercing thoroughly with clean water immediately after swimming. This works perfectly in the shower, for example. You can use some piercing soap to gently clean the piercing and the wound area. Then you can spray your piercing with a saline solution, or make a warm saline solution yourself and soak your piercing in it for a while. Then rinse the piercing again with clean water and carefully pat it dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or tissue.

No shower nearby? Then make a saline solution with boiled water and try to work as cleanly as possible. In this blog post you can read how to best make a saline solution yourself.
